Welcome to Street 21

Welcome to Street 21, a blog devoted to the communities of 223 and 231 West 21st Street. This blog will serve as a forum for members to share information about the building(s) and the community, and as a way to connect with their neighbors. Many of us been living here for years and have accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the neighborhood and life in these wonderful buildings. My hope is that this blog will become a resource for information concerning subjects as diverse as: finding a plumber or cleaning service, recommendations/warnings about contractors, restaurant suggestions etc. This blog will also be a source for news about changes happening in the neighborhood, and the city at large that effect the community. It is a work in progress, so please be patient as I make adjustments along the way.

Anyone is welcome to comment but please avoid personal attacks on individuals. Such comments will be removed. Thanks for your participation!

This blog is not affiliated with the board or of 223 and 231 West 21st Street or Wolff Management.

Thanks
-AH

  2. Thank you Adam; would love to share ideas about community and also lists of such things as reliable workers and restaurants of good value. On that note, does anyone know someone who does meticulous cleaning, is medium fast, but is busy enough to fit me in only once every 4-5 weeks for 3- 4 hours? I keep up with my own cleaning but I would love someone to come just to wash floors and scrub the bathroom.

also-I came upon someone mugging a building resident in the vestibule between the two doors at 2AM in late December; the perp got his cell phone, wallet, laptop, and cash and ran. The police came and subsequently I heard that the perp used the cell phone and so they found him, but the warning is to try and make sure that no one comes in behind you when entering the vestibule. Perhaps we could have the intercom moved to the outside and lock the outside door or install a real or as someone suggested 'deterrent fake' camera? Any thoughts? The resident who suggested the camera real or fake idea said that this has occurred many other times. Is anyone aware of this? I was not.

Let's make an effort to clean the dryer lint traps before taking clothes out of the dryer and wipe up detergent spills (just bring a rag or paper towel down with you when doing laundry). Ramon has enough to do and it is sort of yucky since we all share those machines. It is a good, neighborly practice.

Love the book sharing bookcase in basement; a great place for me to put my recently read books or outgrown ones and pick up other ones.

  3. Thanks, Joanna, for all your comments and suggestions.

I was alarmed to hear about the mugging, as well. I don't know how frequent the attacks have been but I have heard of two such incidents in the past the six years that I have been here. We shouldn't take the safety of our neighborhood for granted.

Since you brought it up, we might as well start the next post with a call for recommendations for cleaning people.

  4. The charming snowman in the 223 backyard is the work of Yannic of 5N with some help from Milo at 1H and other friends.

He can be viewed in our sculpture garden from the 223 stairwell windows.

Who wants to make one for the 231 yard?

  8. Yesterday morning a sanitation truck with the plow attached went barreling down our block breaking a major branch off our pear tree in front of 223, a sad loss. It's the very branch we see in the Blog photo.

  10. Yuki -

Tommy is an excellent electrician and has done a lot of work for the two buildings and some for me. He was recommended to me by the Wolffs. The draw back is that he is often in demand and may not have time for small jobs. The contact info I have for him is:
